Start by gathering the facts. In Mary's case, Where do families currently collect water? How far do they travel, how much does it cost, and is the source available throughout the year? Speak with women, young people, teachers, health workers, local leaders and people with disabilities, whose experience can reveal challenges that may otherwise be missed. Consider water quality, water quantity, seasonal changes, existing pipes, wells or tanks, land access, energy supply, sanitation needs and who will operate and maintain the system over time.
